Haley Bishop Exhibits At Vintage Inspired!

Haley Bishop
Untitled
December 7 – December 31, 2012

Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace is pleased to announce an exhibition of mixed media work from Vermont artist Haley Bishop, December 7th through December 31st. There will be an opening reception Friday, December 7th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

The places in Haley Bishop’s life are extremely important, and form the basis for much of her work. Using pen-and-ink illustration, watercolor, acrylic, and computer scans, Haley transforms images of familiar spaces into colorful, layered mixed-media pieces. Haley considers herself an abstract colorist, though many of her pieces contain objects of familiarity & comfort. In her work, Bishop often gives life to her childhood memories, recalling places that were important to her and examining them through the lens of empty space, familiar objects and shapes, and detailed house interiors.
Haley Bishop: Originally from California, Haley Bishop has spent most of her life in Vermont. She attended Burlington Tech Center, studying Design & Illustration, before receiving her BFA from the School Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University. Haley loves working with children, and when not creating art, works as a nanny. She often involves them in her art, and feels that her own work has a very childlike quality. Royal Haeger Talk at Vintage Inspired

Royal Haeger / Royal Hickman
Discussion with Tom Jiamachello
Thursday, November 15th, 6:30pm – Free

Founded in 1871 in Dundee Illinois, the Haeger Pottery Company is one of the oldest in America still producing. They created their “Royal Haeger” line in 1939.
Haeger’s lines of pottery changed with the times and reflected the design aesthetic of the era. From the Art Deco inspired sculptural animal lines of the 1920-1940 period to the wilder and funky Post-War period, Haeger hired chief designers who knew what the American public wanted in their homes.
Two special designers stand out, one a master of shape, the other a master of glaze.
Royal Arden Hickman joined the Haeger company in 1939, recruited by the President of the Company, Edmund Haeger. Prior to joining Haeger his designs had been produced in California. The abstract sculptural nature of his designs have many collectors chasing his wares. What is less known about his production is that in 1944, he moved to Tennessee and started his own pottery company, taking with him a glaze master named Frank Petty, whose “Petty Crystal” glazes were way ahead of the time.
The glaze master whose work appeals to me most is Alrun Guest, who was Chief Designer at Haeger from 1969 to the present. Well aware of the trends in color and design in Europe, her work resembles the Italian Mid-century pottery of Bitossi. Her volcanic brutalist glazes are commanding attention from discerning collectors today, particularly her Orange Peel, Lemon Peel, and Lime Peel glazes items.
I will feature items from the Art Deco period of Haeger to the stunning examples of Alrun Guest’s work in my lecture. Come prepared to discover masterpieces of 20th century design made right here in the heart of America.

Abbey Meaker Photography at Vintage Inspired!

Abbey Meaker
The Unseen
October 5 – October 30, 2012

Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace is pleased to announce an exhibition entitled The Unseen, featuring Black and White and Color photography by Burlington, Vermont artist Abbey Meaker. The exhibition opens with a reception on First Friday, October 5th from 5-8pm. The exhibition runs through October 30th.

Los Angeles film critic and poet Dreux Moreland describes Abbey Meaker’s photography in this way: “There is a scene in Chris Marker’s 1962 film, La Jetee, in which a woman, after a remarkable dissection of cross-dissolves, suddenly comes alive: staring into the hollow face of the camera, the future of love blinks her eyes. After twenty minutes of still photographs and auditory association, the moment is nothing short of revelation. Abbey Meaker’s photographic work is an evocative touchstone of the same variety. Like the coma victim who exists in solipsism, a state of perpetual twilight, faintly working memories like rosary beads inside the cathedral of time which is the skull, the photographs tug me to places I have only visited in the gray. A hand lost to fog, a building equally consumed by weeds, by moss, by emulsion, a woman looking for the vanishing traces of youth in a window, the erotic riptide of loss.”
Abbey Meaker: Artist Abbey Meaker grew up in Putney, Vermont and currently resides in Burlington. Abbey has been shooting photos for about ten years, which has culminated in a desire to be challenged as an artist in an academic setting. To this end, she is currently enrolled at Burlington College, pursuing a B.A. in Fine Art, and ultimately an MFA. Abbey also works as the studio manager for sculptor Richard Erdman. Relatively new to exhibiting her work in a public setting, Abbey recently was part of an exhibition at Furchgott Sourdiffe in Shelburne, Vermont and has previously shown her work at Piazzo Barsanti in Pietrasanta, Italy. Abbey’s writing and photography has been featured in numerous online publications, including Nighthawks, Orphanwork, Tourist Zine, Pas un Autre, Hillbilly Magazine and more.
