Modern God/Goddess Canvas Class
Saturday, June 29th, 11am to 5pm
$80

Mixed Media with Renée Savoie
This class is modeled after Renée’s Modern Goddess series which celebrates discovering your inner child to reveal the true god/goddess that lies within. As adults it is easy for some of us to forget who you are or lose your way. You are still in there, every single bit of you. Your hopes and dreams and good memories and that happy, fun, adventurous YOU is in there! In this class you will create an 18”X18” canvas mixed media piece where you will collage and paint yourself back to your happy place. There will be lots of room for self-expression and no experience is necessary. Renée is a firm believer that there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.
All materials will be provided but students should bring if they have available: A heat gun, favorite paint brushes, old photos or ephemera, images that truly speak to you, favorite acrylics and an answer to the questions “What did you want to be when you grew up?” or “What made you truly happy as a child?”
Renée Savoie: Renée Savoie of Peaberry Designs is a self-taught mixed media artist from Canada’s capital region. Renee has been creative for as long as she can remember but once she discovered the world of mixed media she knew she had found her bliss. She has lived in different places around the world but no place has been as influential on her creativity as her time spent in the Canadian North. A huge fan of all things vintage, she combines previously loved items with her love of texture, paper and paint to make things with depth and character. Renee loves to experiment, constantly trying new products and techniques. When this coffee addict is not traveling to teach or showcase her work she is hanging out with her partner Chris and three beautiful girls who are a huge source of inspiration. She hopes to inspire people all over to find and follow their bliss!! You can find her and her creative musings at www.peaberrydesigns.com

Royal Haeger / Royal Hickman
Discussion with Tom Jiamachello
Thursday, November 15th, 6:30pm – Free

Founded in 1871 in Dundee Illinois, the Haeger Pottery Company is one of the oldest in America still producing. They created their “Royal Haeger” line in 1939.
Haeger’s lines of pottery changed with the times and reflected the design aesthetic of the era. From the Art Deco inspired sculptural animal lines of the 1920-1940 period to the wilder and funky Post-War period, Haeger hired chief designers who knew what the American public wanted in their homes.
Two special designers stand out, one a master of shape, the other a master of glaze.
Royal Arden Hickman joined the Haeger company in 1939, recruited by the President of the Company, Edmund Haeger. Prior to joining Haeger his designs had been produced in California. The abstract sculptural nature of his designs have many collectors chasing his wares. What is less known about his production is that in 1944, he moved to Tennessee and started his own pottery company, taking with him a glaze master named Frank Petty, whose “Petty Crystal” glazes were way ahead of the time.
The glaze master whose work appeals to me most is Alrun Guest, who was Chief Designer at Haeger from 1969 to the present. Well aware of the trends in color and design in Europe, her work resembles the Italian Mid-century pottery of Bitossi. Her volcanic brutalist glazes are commanding attention from discerning collectors today, particularly her Orange Peel, Lemon Peel, and Lime Peel glazes items.
I will feature items from the Art Deco period of Haeger to the stunning examples of Alrun Guest’s work in my lecture. Come prepared to discover masterpieces of 20th century design made right here in the heart of America.

Mid Century Italian Pottery
Lecture by Tom Jiamachello
Thursday, August 30th, 6:30pm – Free

After World War II, some of the most beautiful pottery items from the top designers in Italy were imported to fill the desire for “the modern” and “the colorful.” Two major importers were the New York City based firm of Richards Morgenthau & Co whose Raymor line competed with the Rosenthal-Netter line. Both firms imported vast quantities of top-notch Mid-century design into the U.S.
Great artists such as Aldo Londi, Alvino Bagni, Manicoli, Bruno Bagnoli, Fantoni – all produced works imported into this country.
I will concentrate my talk on the work of the Bitossi firm– or more precisely the artistic wing of Bitossi called Flavia – where Aldo Londi, was Art Director from 1946. Based in Montelupo, Tuscany, Bitossi exported pieces from Italy under both the Raymor and Rosenthal Netter labels. I will have examples of these vintage pieces for you to see, touch and admire.
Cost: Free!

David Gil and Bennington Potters
Wednesday, April 18th, 6:30pm – Free

In this engaging and informative lecture, Vintage Inspired Marketplace vendor Tom Jiamachello discusses the extraordinary work of Vermont potter David Gil and his celebrated studio, Bennington Potters.
Prior to changing the name to Bennington Potters around 1960, David Gil’s company was known as Cooperative Design. There, he and other Alfred University trained graduates fashioned all sorts of interesting Mid-Century items. Having trained at Alfred University, Gil came to Bennington in 1948. His designs are included in many Mid-Century exhibits and catalogues.
His early designs have not yet been completely documented, so rarities are still out there to be found. There is a large group of people who are interested in David Gil’s designs. (For more information, please click here.)
David Gil was featured in the publication Vermont Life in its Winter 1961 issue. In an eight page spread with one full color image and 13 black and white images, there is a full history of the founding of the pottery along with great visual references of the ware being made at that time. One can see the iconic designs of Yusuke Aida, especially the double trigger mug and coffeepot along with other fascinating items. A great reference!
Bennington Potters is among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters. After 1960, they made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores. In their 1964 catalogue, Gil described their creations as “Art Objects in the Practical Realm” – Museum Honored, Hand-Crafted, Modestly Priced”
Tom will present many hard-to-find designs he’s collected in the last ten years. Come see the whimsy and brilliance of the late David Gil (1923? -2002)

In this engaging and informative lecture, Vintage Inspired Marketplace vendor, Tom Jiamachello, offers insights into the extraordinary work of Vermont potter, Stanley Ballard.
Vermont studio potter Stanley Ballard (1917-1960) produced a body of work that has attracted national attention from collectors of Mid-century pottery.
Stanley Ballard graduated from Alfred University’s highly respected Ceramic Program in 1939, having studied there while these influential teachers were part of the faculty: Marion Fosdick, Charles Harder, Clarence Merritt, and C. Katherine Nelson.
Ballard’s first studio was in Burlington’s Old North End. By the early 1950s, he had progressed to a store on Shelburne Road near Holmes Raod. At age 43, Ballard’s career ended with his untimely tragic death in February 1960. He was featured in the Summer 1953 issue of Vermont Life.
