Source and Alter
February 1st – 26th, 2013
Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace is pleased to announce an exhibition of work by Vermont artist Christy Mitchell entitled Source and Alter, February 1st through the 26th. There will be an opening reception on First Friday, February 1st; from 5 to 8pm. Exploring creative re-use as an art form; Christy Mitchell utilizes discarded architectural drawings, children’s books, magazines, wire and bathroom tiles in her ongoing series of work. Through repetition, from a series of 7 to 1,000, the pieces start to take on a visual language of their own.
Christy Mitchell’s artwork stems from a lifetime of curiosity, an extreme eye for detail, a respect for wearable/functional arts, computer design, and much more. Her work is conceptual, and made with materials found in the world around her – the discarded pieces that are reinvented and given back to the same community that threw them away. Christy has been producing an exhibit once a year called, ‘Make Art, Repeat.’, in which she creates a body of work in the month before the show opens, only with materials she finds.
Christy Mitchell is an artist and creative place maker currently living in Burlington, Vermont. Born in the Deep South in 1980, she spent her childhood living between Alabama and Indiana. Mitchell returned to the south to study at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia and received her B.F.A. in metals and jewelry design. Missing the experience of all four seasons, she chose Vermont as her new northern home after graduation in 2003. She joined an artist collective in the South End of town and has stayed in the area ever since. Since founding The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery in 2009, she has opened up a total of three studio collectives with a fourth on the way. With the completion of the fourth space in the South End, Mitchell will manage working artist studios for nearly 40 artists and curate monthly exhibits for 5 locations. She hosts her own solo exhibitions every November at The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery to keep her body of work current. When not hard at work in the local Burlington art scene, Mitchell enjoys spending time with her 11 year old son, Luke, her loving partner, Alex and their two cats, Piper and Ivan.
